Unisphere and Meteomatics cooperate to increase Safety and Automation for Flight Operation of Drones

Konstanz / St. Gallen, 4th August 2020 – The flight management software company Unisphere, and weather data expert Meteomatics have signed a cooperation agreement to improve the safety and efficiency of flight operations with drones and air taxis.

Under this agreement, Unisphere will provide its customers with automated flight management services for drones and air taxis that will include accurate weather data from Meteomatics. Pilot knowledge is transferred into software to automate decision-making, realize efficiencies, and save costs.

Automated flight management has an enormous potential to enable industries without aviation know-how, such as agriculture, logistics, traffic management, logistics, and more to operate unmanned aircraft safely and efficiently in a commercial context.

Meteomatics will deliver accurate weather forecasts with an accuracy down to 90m directly to Unisphere where the information is aggregated with aeronautical information, geodata, aircraft performance, operational limitations, and sensor characteristics. The resulting 4-D trajectories include pilot knowledge and all relevant information required for every individual flight. Unisphere provides the trajectories to its customers worldwide through API or user interface.

The collaboration of Meteomatics and Unisphere marks an exciting development for the aerospace community. The integration of highly accurate weather information with aeronautical engineering and optimization algorithms in a performant cloud infrastructure provides users a unique service to plan and execute their flight operations of unmanned aircraft.

“The powerful weather data API and the accuracy of weather information made Meteomatics the logical choice for us. Their enthusiasm to integrate specific requests will provide our customers the quality of weather data required to automate drone operations,” said Christoph Schlettig, CEO of Unisphere.

“At Meteomatics, we operate Meteodrones ourselves since 2012. We certainly see the flight management platform of Unisphere as a mandatory service to enable highly automated flight operation of unmanned aircraft and we are proud to support flight safety,” added Dr. Martin Fengler, Meteomatics CEO.
