EuroHAPS – European High Altitude Platform System Demonstration

EuroHAPS – Strategic Research and Demonstration

As part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) project to demonstrate High Altitude Platform Systems, Unisphere is providing simulation and flight management expertise for major airborne demonstrators. The project develops three Lighter-than-Air (LTA) technologies – Strategic Airships, Hybrid Airships, and Autonomous Stratospheric Balloons – addressing critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Unisphere’s technology is used to automate complex flight planning and weather risk management, identifying suitable windows for the climb and descent phases to ensure mission success in different European locations.

Our Strategic Support Throughout the Lifecycle

Strategic Assessment & Uptime Planning

Insights through Operational Analytics

Our operational analytics service provides the data foundation for your HAPS business case, operational plans, and engineering decisions. Therefore, we analyze your aircraft’s specific constraints and multiple years of historic weather conditions in your mission area. This allows us to determine seasonal uptime, identify the safest launch windows, and predict overall service availability.

Flight Planning Platform

HAPS Operations Management

NOVA provides weather intelligence by combining local sensor data from your takeoff/landing points with high-resolution model data along your flight path. This ensures your flight planning benefits from the best available data throughout your mission. The simulation technology allows for a detailed 4D assessment of weather to optimize your planning.

NOVA Platform

Service Uptime

Understand your HAPS’s uptime well in advance of operations to manage customer expectations, select suited mission areas and establish a clear business case.

Professional Flight Planning

With NOVA, you can streamline your team’s flight planning and gain a comprehensive view of your weekly flight operations. This serves as a baseline for safely sclaing your organization.

Operations Automation

The underlying simulation engine, combined with specific performance models, allows you to automate flight planning for a fleet of HAPS and optimize their operations.

OBeLiSk – Operational Integration of HAPS into German Airspace

OBeLiSk – Automated Airspace Coordination

As a key partner in the OBeLiSk project, Unisphere collaborated with the German Air Navigation Service Provider (DFS) and the German Meteorological Service (DWD) to bridge the gap between HAPS operations and traditional Air Traffic Control. Leveraging the NOVA Flight Management Platform, we utilized 4D trajectory simulations to manage the unique challenges of integrating slow-moving, long-endurance aircraft into the high-traffic German airspace. The project successfully validated procedures for the automated negotiation of flight plans, ensuring that HAPS can safely transit commercial altitude bands by accounting for real-time weather constraints and aircraft performance.
